Los Angeles officially has the worst traffic in the world, a new study has revealed.
Global traffic research firm INRIX reports that Angelenos spent an average of 104 hours stuck in traffic in 2016.
The study also notes that traffic and congestion costs each Los Angeles driver $2,408 each and the city as a whole $9.6 billion from direct and indirect costs. Direct costs relate to the value of fuel and time wasted, and indirect costs refer to freight and business fees from company vehicles idling in traffic, which are passed on to households through higher prices.
INRIX noted that Moscow, Russia has the worlds second worst traffic congestion, with commuters in that city spending an average of 91 hours sitting in gridlocked vehicles. Manhattan, New York placed third internationally and second place in America with 89 hours. San Francisco, California placed fourth (83 hours); Bogota, Colombia was fifth (80 hours); and Sao Paulo, Brazil sixth (77 hours).

Well, as far as drivers go, I concur. S. CA has some of the best non-professional drivers in the *world*. But unfortunately like CA itself, it has not only the best, but the worst of everything too, including drivers.
When people from smaller towns, who’ve never been here roll out of LAX, they’re literally blown away. They see 8 lanes of fwy, each way, as they see people changing lanes say at 75mph in 1.2 seconds into a hole barely big enough to fit a car into...And traffic doesn’t even flinch or hiccup. I get it.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been to D.C. and to be honest I don’t think I ever got outside the beltway.
The best place to see that is on I-15 southbound from Vegas on a Sunday afternoon. Like watching Christmas lights in the left lane.
Sammy Hagar wrote “I Can’t Drive 55” decades ago because of this; a friend tried to compare it to rush hour in the NYC metro area: We have three-lane highways that get congested during the morning and evening commutes; they (LA) have five-lane highways that are clogged all day...
That is an oddly beautiful picture.
But no, I wouldn’t want to be in it either. :)
I’d always thought Beijing was the worst. Interesting.
I have family in the LA area. It used to be that we could time our visits (arriving and leaving their house) to beat the gridlock rush hours, but in the last several years, it doesn’t seem to matter what time, day or night you’re on certain freeways, it’s always bumper to bumper. I always wonder where all these people are going at such weird hours.
Yes, very pretty pic from above. :)
lol. Right. Like having to wait a minute for the microwave to heat something up. I've been to the surrounding states of CO many times, but I only appreciated how totally unclogged Wyoming's roads are this past August. I'm talking a MAJOR hwy...I-25. Not some lonely county road. There were many points where my daughter and I were the only people on the road...this was in August during the day! Not some off time of the year/day. And this weekend I just got back from Kansas. It was very much the same on parts of I-70. I traveled mostly by night, but during the day it was like that, too. The front range in Colorado from about Fort Collins to south Colorado Springs can get very congested (not Los Angeles congested, I'm sure), but many parts of Colorado are still very much like Wyoming and parts of Kansas and Utah. I love being on lonely roads. Scary and fun.
You get the flying car and take away MIL’s flying license. :)
