Goodbye, Brass?

Let’s skip the appetizer and get right to the meat and potatoes of a manufacturer’s claims for a new cartridge case technology to replace the 150-year reign of brass. Here’s what Shell Shock Technologies (SST) says about their two-piece, nickel-aluminum-stainless steel 9mm Luger NAS3 cases:

•Stronger, cheaper and half the weight of brass.
•Greater corrosion resistance.
•More internal volume.
•More consistent ignition.
•+P velocities without +P pressures.
•Cases won’t stretch, no trimming required.
•Withstands 40 or more reloadings.
•Picks up with a magnet.
•Can be anodized different colors for instant ID.

The article says new 9mm brass cases run from $.14 to $.17 per. I have never purchased virgin brass but I get brass cased boxer primed 9mm (Magtech from SG Ammo) for $.19 now and I’m still shooting way cheaper stuff I stocked up on years ago so I’ll probably never try it.

Don't know if I will either.

“Goodbye brass???? Are we supposed to rely completely on woodwinds??? “

The new casings can stand up to 40 percussions.

Exactly. Interesting but not something that I need. Have buckets of brass that I’ve never sorted.

Yup, id be for it if the costs are equal or better, and if it holds up to reload specs.

But how well does it seal the chamber compared to brass. If not as well it result in a gun that needs cleaning more often.

About time Trump drained the Obama-filled swamp leading our otherwise excellent military. Oh, wait...

Wouldn’t it have to produce lower pressure if the volume is greater, and all else stays the same?

The price is good enough that I’d try 1000 at $99. They had me at “pick it up with a magnet”. After a day of hot shooting, I hate having to bend down to scrounge brass on an outdoor range. I also hate that I might be getting someone else’s brass that’s been reloaded 8 or 9 times and is just begging to rupture. Lubing is no big deal, I usually throw out misloaded 9mm rounds rather than trying to pull the bullet. I’m a little worried about lower pressures since that means lower velocities unless I load what would be considered a hot load. But it looks like it’s worth a try.

Although it is a great concept, the fact that it requires EXPENSIVE custom reloading dies, makes it not worth the money to invest in. Brass is cheap and so are the reloading dies. It’s not for me.

I don’t reload, but I like the price if is true.

Where the author gets his info. or price per round for brass rounds is questionable. I never see those prices.

Hmmm. I see you have to by the “special” dies for reloading as well. That alone killed my interest.

But it looks like it’s worth a try.

If you do let us know how it goes.
