"Mike Lupica is being blamed for the cancellation of The Sports Reporters after the shows run of nearly 30 years on ESPN.
The Daily News columnist was a panelist for many years on the Sunday morning show, on which he and other print reporters such as the Boston Globes Bob Ryan and the Detroit Free Press Mitch Albom discussed the weeks hot-button issues in sports.
When longtime host John Saunders unexpectedly died at 61 in August, Lupica jumped at the chance to replace him.
He was a total diva, one insider said. He was abusive to people, and mean to the staff.
But the biggest problem was that Lupica talked too much.
When youre a panelist, you are there to give your opinions. When youre the host, youre supposed to elicit other peoples opinions. He could never shut up, said my source.
ESPN announced last month that the show will end in May.
Lupicas sports talk-radio show on ESPN New York was canceled in 2015, as he was beaten badly in the ratings by Mike Francesa on WFAN, who at the time had roughly triple Lupicas audience share."
Jason Whitlock on Lupica in 2009 . . .
“Mike Lupica: His Parting Shot on the next episode of The Sports Reporters will touch on the emotional scars he carries from paying his way through Boston College as a human bowling ball in the American Dwarf Bowling Association.”
Wasn’t lupica the one that wore lingerie and bit his girlfriend’s shoulder?
That was Marv Albert. Lupica could only bite a women’s shoulder if she is sitting down.
Also, Victoria’s Secret doesn’t carry a panty that small . . .
That’s right, thanks for the save.
Costas is another weasel.
Lupica was always calling into Imus’s show when he had his Fox Business AM gig. That got canceled. They guy is the kiss of death.
The story suggesting that the decision I made about the future of The Sports Reporters had anything to do with Mike Lupica is completely inaccurate,” the statement said. “Mike has been a constant throughout the shows long history and played an important and constructive role in the difficult transition following the tragic death of his good friend and long-time host John Saunders.
-John Skipper President ESPN
Of course Mr. Skipper could possibly be shading the truth as ESPN leaders have done from time to time.
I used to read his pieces in the Daily News on Billy Martin ,Reggie, and George Steinbrenner back when I was in 4th grade.
He’s been around a long time.
