But I am puzzled why Gorsuch would go to such a leftist as Blumenthal and talk at all, unless it was strategy to get Democrat votes.

Gorsuch has to meet with members of the Senate. He had to meet with Feinstein the other day. But, maybe he was hiding his true feelings if he said President Trump's comments were demoralizing and disheartening. Maybe what he really meant was: "Hell yes President Trump's comments were demoralizing and disheartening, because he didn't far enough.
