Stalin and Putin are different people. “Interpreting” them to be the same is nonsense.
Realpolitik is dirty business. If we can get a bad guy to behave and keep the Islamic enemies of civilization suppressed, we have won. Values judging another country where their leader has a 85% approval rating is almost as stupid as democracy building in the Middle East
