Excellent questions. I did study history extensively. With also a duel emphasis in sociology/psychology. Which in essence is part of the arena that these questions are explored on a deeper level. Which I would encourage. Although I can't recommend a source for the excellent questions you asked. I do know historically there is literature that would very simple state clear answers to these questions. Yet around the 60's that body of work began to be leftist centric increasingly so. But a great and interesting resource for the deeper psycho/sociological analysis of these questions especially regarding totalitarianism is fascinating. He has had several book and essay on the subject. Yet I can not find the very large book in which I was first exposed to his analysis.
But for the pure and simple answers to your questions I would think a nice dig into Google might produce some decent info and possibly historic resources. As mentioned most everything now is tainted with liberalism. So be wary there.
