The man took Simmons' clothes, wallet and car keys. After negotiating with police over the phone, the man agreed to hand over the pastor's belongings. The newspaper also reported that the husband handed over the handgun to the local chapter of the NAACP.

Since when does the NAACP take charge of handguns that might be involved in incidents?

You have to remember that the laws apply to different people in different ways. Some are allowed to obey only laws they approve of. Some are allowed to violate those they do not approve. Some are allowed to violate any law, including murder. And on some the laws are strictly enforced.
