There was an asteroid a few years ago (a big one like the Russian one a few years ago) that passed by earth at something like 1/3 the distance to the moon - so very close IMHO.
They didn’t see it until a few days AFTER it passed by the earth. The sun was in their eyes! (Seriously).
The pressure wave should be detectable in enough time to know... like animals sense hurricane hits.
