As we sit shivering through winter take a look back at the summers of long ago, before air conditioning, when escaping the sweltering summer heat of New York City meant a 25 cent ticket on an excursion train to the beaches of New Jersey and another ten cents to rent a bathing suit.
Of course the well off could simply rent a summer house or a hotel room on or near the boardwalk.
I love shorpy. The problem is the site hooks me in every time I go there. There is so much to see that I can’t get off it sometimes.
W.C. Fields got his start in Atlantic City.
He would pretend to drown, they would rescue him and take him to the local bar to revive - he would awake and exclaim “I’ll never drink water again!”
I remember going to Atlantic City as a very young kid, long before anyone thought of turning it into a gambling destination, and having a great day there, just enjoying it as a beach, making sand castles, etc.
I’ll venture a guess and say no.
