I had a mint M1903A3 Springfield and let it slip out of my possession. I have a Garand M1 (1943 as issued) and wish I had had the opportunity to fire them side by side on hte same range. I qualified Expert on M1 Rifle, M1 Carbine, and BAR. Can still do it, I'm sure.

My dad said that at the beginning of the war when he was in boot camp they had Springfields. Yes they were shooting Springfields but these were chambered in rimfire 22 caliber to save on training costs.
Not until the recruits neared their end of training were they issued their service weapon chambered in 30-06.

I believe the Marines were still using Springfields on Guadalcanal in 1942-1943.
