Marv Levy is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his work as head coach of the Bills from 1986 to 1997. And if given the opportunity, hed be up for trying to get them back to the Super Bowl.
Levy told 104.5 The Team in Albany that he thinks hed be up to the task, even though hes now 91 years old.
I might do it, Levy said. It was one of those things where after forty seven years of coaching I really needed to get that deep breath to step aside but after a couple of years passed I very much would have liked to come back . But Id do it but Im not deluding myself to think that the offer would come. If the offer did come I sure would consider it. Sure.
Levy retired from coaching at age 72 and was tied with George Halas for the oldest coach in NFL history. That hes still sharp enough at age 91 to consider coaching is remarkable. But, as Levy seems to know, its not going to happen.
He looked like a cadaver when he left. Probably would do as good or better than Rex.
Relax Marv. Enjoy your retirement. I dont think the Bills want to lose another 4 Super Bowls in the near future. It’s all good bro...
You gotta love a guys’s sprirt when he’s 91 and thinks hey, I’ve got some good years left ;-)
Born in 1925. God bless him, but still. Coaching for the NFL is grueling.
Why not? Some say Coughlin is in the running for jags coach and he is 70. Call it the geriatric football league.
And a WW II veteran!
I respect him for the greatest comeback in NFL history but he’s already in the history book for both the wrong and right reasons.
Early life Levy's family emigrated from Montreal, Canada. His father, a decorated World War I veteran, ran a small business on the South Side of Chicago. He graduated from South Shore High School in Chicago in 1943. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Forces and spent the remainder of World War II in the military; Levy was discharged from the army shortly after the war ended. Though he was known to use historical examples to inspire his teams, Levy corrected those who used war and combat metaphors to describe football games by telling them that he actually fought in a war and that football and war were in no way comparable.[1] Referring to the Super Bowl, he once said "This is not a must-win; World War II was a must-win". Wikipedia
Marv being a WW2 vet makes, sense from one of the Pep talks he gave to his team while they were on the road:
“The reason why Hitler lost the war is because he couldn’t win on the road”
This quote is not only funny because there is truth in it.
Going to 4 consecutive Super Bowls is an accomplishment in itself. That loss against the Giants was a total fluke. They should have won that game.
Marv, Marv, Marv... We don’t need the grim reaper to show up at a game.
Did you watch the 30 for 30 documentary about the Bills’ run?
I'm paraphrasing.
“They say two things happen when you get older. One is you begin to forget things. And I can’t remember what the other one is right now.” Marv Levy
Wasnt he the last coach to let his QB call his own plays?
Levy has the unique distinction of being at two World Series involving the Chicago Cubs. After being discharged from the military, he made it to the 1945 World Series. In 2016, he was an honored guest at the World Series.
Retired US Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has attended the World Series at Wrigley Field in 1929 (the first time that Wrigley hosted the Series), 1932 and 2016.
No Marv. Your time is done.
One can only hope that the Bills hire someone of Marv’s expertise.
