I don't wear, or even own, a watch. Not even a cheap digital one. And even if I hit the mega-million lotto, I wouldn't ever be able to drop half a grand, much less 3000, 10000, or 20000 (isn't that the upper end of Rolex?) bucks on a watch.

That said, I think a finely crafted watch has something that a cellphone simply lacks. Something that has been engineered right out of modern technology. It's like the difference between my AR15 and my pre-1900 made Argentine Mauser. Yeah, the AR is better in every way...But it lacks the grace of the old Mauser nonetheless.

The upper end of Rolex is around 100 grand for platinum diamond encrusted ones. There are other extreme rare editions or one offs from other watchmakers that run into the low millions. Beyond the utility of timekeeping they are jewelry pieces since like you said a cheap quartz watch can fulfill the utility part for most people.
