In perhaps the most ironic ending to a sporting event ever, Grambling State beat North Carolina Central in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl in part because of a penalty for excessive celebration.
After NC Centrals Quentin Atkinson pulled down a 39-yard TD pass from Malcolm Bell to cut the deficit to 10-9 with just over two minutes remaining, Atkinson was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct when he removed his helmet while galloping around the end zone.

“Taking off his helmet to celebrate in the end zone is an automatic penalty. “
Watched it live. I thought he was out of the end zone when he took it off. At what point on the side line/out of bounds can you take your helmet off and run around. The look-at-me homie will probably catch some comments from the linemen that busted their butt all night for him to blow it so his girl friends could see his face on da flat screen.
What part of “he removed his helmet in the end-zone” are those upset with the ref not getting? Rules are rules.
Yep, those are the rules. Of course, changing the rules because you don’t like the outcome is all the rage these days.
he did not take his helmet off in the end zone... he was on the sideline

Re: pic in #16.
Can you imagine the trouble that sailor would be in today?
He’d be spending years in jail and have ‘sexual predator’ hung around his neck for the rest of his life.
So if he hadn’t taken off his helmet it would not have been a penalty?
A Tennessee Vol took his helmet off a few years ago at the end of the game (in frustration, in a losing cause) a few years ago...not penalized as I recall but was punished by the coach.
A good official will officiate with the rulebook, and not by the rulebook. A running back comes up short on and 4th and 2, with his team down by 5 points with 30 seconds left, and takes his helmet off in sadness, and isn't making a scene, is not going to get flagged by me. The guy that made the tackle and is jumping around, and takes his helmet off, heck yeah, he's getting flagged.
It’s a well known rule that’s been around for awhile. There’s no excuse for breaking it.
The OP article said he was in the end zone. Watching the video I concur with you, however - it looks like the kid was out of the end zone when he caught the ball as well.
Celebration Bowl?
How far down the “Bowl Ladder” is that?
Already happened in the Pros. New Orleans Saints got 3 penalties in one game for 'excessive crowd noise' in the Dome.
Watched it live. The catch was reviewed and he was in when he caught the ball. He was good by about 3 or 4 inches. I don’t care who won that game. I do find the decline in officiating disgusting where one bad call or no call determines who wins a hard fought game. The other bad no call was in the NC game when the quarterback was slapped on the side of his helmet as he passed out of his end zone. Ref standing right there looking at it threw a flag. It would have been a first down and out of the shadow of their own goal posts. After a discussion with the ref in the white hat the flag was picked up. It was replayed and replayed and even the sports casters were talking about how that was a clear penalty... slap to the helmet.
“I read where a recent study showed that one out of three liberals is just as stupid as the other two.”
I love this!! My I use it?
Shoddy lying journalism again. The headline says the game was decided by the penalty while the article reveals that it merely contributed to the victory.

Happened in the 60’s in college game when the band members on their own played “There Blind Mice” after a bad call on the field. Band got flagged when they did it for a third time. Those refs really sucked.

It’s not mine. I read it somewhere. :)
So, be my guest.
The video shows he went out of the back of the end zone and removed his helmet. He was not on his own sideline.
At that point, it becomes a judgment call, and subject to second guessing in the media. But if he pulls it off to get the TV glory, it's an easy flag. Solo expressions will draw a flag a lot quicker than a group display. And the director will frequently try to catch the player on the sideline after the play, so he'd still likely get some legal face time.
And remember the corollary rule - if the helmet comes off inadvertently during a play, the player has to sit out a play on the sideline, although no penalty is assessed.
he was not in the field of play.... it you go out of the back of the end zone you are out of bounds. so where does one have to be when NOT on the field of play to be able to take their helmet off?
