In his post astronaut life, the best thing I’ve seen is the episode of Frasier where he’s assisting with a radio program on spaceflight. While Frasier and Roz are arguing in the control room, he’s recording his sightings of alien creatures. He ends up taking the tape with no one other than him knowing what’s on it.

He wasn’t the first man in space but he was the first American in space.

He was the 1st American to orbit the earth, Al Shepard was the 1st American in space.

“but he was the first American in space.”

No, no. Navy Captain Alan Shepherd was the first American in space - if you want to discount the many X - 15 flights which made it to the fringes of space.

He had balls of tempered steel to do what he did.

RIP: Hero

2007 is what I found online. And Scott Carpenter died a few years ago.

Great U.S. Marine and astronaut.

Wish he would have stayed out of politics.

RIP, Sir.

Do you remember that time while he was talking on camera to a reporter a guy walked up and punched him in the face? Cold cocked right on camera. Never knew what that was about.

this man was a genuine hero

Yes he was. And if he hadn't sold out his integrity (and for a cheap price) he would have died forever remembered as a hero.

He was my senator,

He was my senator, too, during the 1980s. I take a much dimmer view of his Senate record than you.

My father-in-law flew F4Us with him in the South Pacific......used to call him “Red” Glenn because he had red hair.

Oh yeah, that was funny. Especially when Glenn pantomimes an alien!

From the Special Operations net:

“Glenn flew 149 combat missions in World War II and Korea, where his wingman and eventual lifelong friend was baseball legend Ted Williams. In Korea, Glenn earned the nickname “Old Magnet Ass” due to his skill in landing his airplane under any condition, even after it was riddled with bullets and had blown tires.”

Its cowardice to go after a man when he can’t defend himself, at the hour after his death.
