My stepfather was Serbian Orthodox and Saint Nicholas was the family patron saint. I didn’t grow up with “Santa Claus” but St. Nicholas - we celebrated Dec 6th every year. For gifts, they were from the family and when I got older we would joke that “Santa” brought a gift for the house (something we wanted for the whole family like a game or furniture etc).

Now that I am a parent, MrR and I are a bit conflicted. “Santa” is part of many children’s lives but I don’t want to lie to them and I am not any worse off for not being given the standard “Santa” story. In fact, I believe I am better off for not growing up with it.

I can understand that being without Santa as a child is no big deal but how on earth can you be better off?

In what way?
