There is a reason why it has become shorthand for the larger thought to say, "only Nixon could have gone to China" because Nixon had demonstrated his anti-Communist credentials more than any other living American. It was he who exposed Alger Hiss and conceived of the perjury charge, it was he who unmasked Helen Gahagan Douglas for the communist dupe she was, it was Nixon who served as vice president for eight years and was attacked in Latin America because of his anti-Communist credentials.

Trump, to the contrary, has been a Democrat, has contributed to Democrats, has been all over all issues in recent decades and has very little credibility for consistency. Recently, he has been visited by Mad Dog Mattis and changed by 180° his opinion on waterboarding. He changed his opinion on the minimum wage. At the request of the very same daughter who arranged the meeting with Al Gore, he proposed a brand-new entitlement to a country $20 trillion in debt. One gets the feeling that Donald Trump is not nearly so Machiavellian as he is malleable for the last person who has is ear.

Even if Trump is as Machiavellian as his fans on this thread insists he is, where is the press release telling us the purpose of the meeting and restating his firm conviction that climate change is a "hoax?"

This is not a minor matter, climate change is the tool, the weapon with which the left proposes to do away with capitalism. If we hand this weapon back to the left and even aim it at our vital center, all of the good intentions of Donald Trump on many other issues will be as nothing. We are advised on this thread to refrain from criticizing Donald Trump and give the man a chance. This is advice which is not heeded when we heard of the proposed nomination of Mitt Romney but we are supposed to assume a passive crouch even now when our very capitalist heritage is at stake. The system does not work that way, Donald Trump, for all his unorthodox campaigning, is not the exception to this rule.

Our role as conservatives is to support him when he is conservative and equally to oppose him as and when he wanders from the true faith. When we do so we advance our conservative/patriotic cause but to do otherwise is to abandon our very reason for existence here.

There is a legitimate role for conservatives who believe that every politician, even every conservative politician, must be fairly appraised and honestly criticized in good faith. To reverse the principle, it is not good faith to dismiss facts or to belittle good-faith criticisms by attacking the messengers. It does not matter whether you like Mark Levin, it does not matter whether Mark Levin's rating numbers are improving (he seems to be doing quite well) or falling, it does not matter whether you can find something about my character to criticize, it matters whether there is merit or not in the substance.

It matters only whether conservative values are advanced or retarded. Adults should understand that what is at stake here especially about climate change is terribly important but our conservative values are not advanced by turning this forum into a mindless cheering section or by turning this forum into a cesspool of personal invective.

Nathan, man, go for it! Someone who actually knows something on this thread. Thank you.

I am more than willing to give Trump time and room. I think most people are aware of Trump's history and it didn't matter, so considering the alternative I am happy to have Trump. When Trump has gone off the reservation, he soon comes back, so I am hopeful he was just being courteous to Al Gore. There is no harm in listening and being attentive. After all, most people including Al Gore just want to be heard. They want to know they were listened to and their views taken into consideration regardless of the result. Perhaps, a snowflake or two will take note.

Obama makes great effort in appearing to be more moderate than reality. He has gone hard left, but his behavior is not threatening. Despite the unpopularity of his policies, he is personally popular, which I don't quite understand.

There you go again. Like the proverbial dog returning to his own vomit, you just can't help yourself.

There is NOTHING to critique yet, but there you go. He's NOT chosen a Secretary of State, he's NOT agreed to throw in with Al Gore. So far his cabinet and staff choices have been nothing short of brilliant, as Mike Pence has pointed out time and again. Conservative, engaged, and perfect for the job. (Yep, that's what Pence keeps telling us, buckle up because so much needs to be done and will be done).

Yet because he actually spoke with Al Gore, because he spoke with Mitt Romney, you come out of the closet and spew your nonsense. You have zero idea what was said in those meetings. Zero.

You were the one who said he could never win when we argued about polls last winter/Spring, that Cruz was the only one who could beat Hillary because polls showed that to be true in February of 2016. You were wrong then, you're wrong now. You were ignorant then, you're ignorant now. Instead of bitching about nothing, why don't you actually do something to help forward the agenda, because what you are doing is just bitching about nothing. You've done that ever since Cruz was starting to get beaten like a red headed step child in the primaries and you can't stop going back to the vomit.

Just once, maybe you could help forward a real agenda, rather than be such a negative nabob. Just once, maybe you could marvel at how Trump has done such great things in such a short time. Just once, help him push something good for the country. Just once.

Please go back to Berlin and play with Angela and her refugees. You deserve each other. Along with Levin. What petulant, thin skinned phonies you all are.
