We all have a favorite, regardless of what our intended quarry may be; that one rifle cartridge that is near and dear to us. Just as our favorite colors can be indicative of our personalities, our favorite rifle cartridge can tell an awful lot about us as shooters. Let us begin, with tongue planted firmly in cheek.
1. .223 Remington This is the Banty rooster of the bunch, the case with the Napoleonic complex; you embrace it believing you can take on the whole world with a microscopic cartridge, and you may just be right. You have no desire, whatsoever, to hear of any other centerfire cartridge, because your level of self confidence when armed with the .223 will send tactical zombie elephants running for their lives, wetting themselves at the very sight of your AR
2. .270 Winchester You are a gentleman, carrying your head high, while rocking a vintage red plaid wool hunting suit. Your claim to fame is the ability to sculpt an effigy of Jack OConnor out of instant mashed potatoes at the deer camp table. Thirty caliber? Never heard of her.
3. .30-06 Springfield Youre the first born child, the apple of mommys eye. Although you never made the Deans list, mama hung every one of your art projects on the fridge, proud as a peacock. You did pretty well in life, and although you may not be the shining star you once were, youre as loyal as a mutt, consistent and trustworthy. Modern bullets have given you a new lease on life, sort of like Viagra or Just For Men gel.
4. .308 Winchester You are the middle child, the defiant one, who always lives in the shadow of your older brother, the 06, but the two of you dont speak at family parties.

The .22 LR:
You are an expert and perfectionist. You do everything very well, due to long practice and preparation.
You excel at many different tasks, and are liked by everyone.
What caliber Marlin is that? I have one in 444.
I’m child number 8 out of 10, but 30-06 is my round. I can use a heavy slug for white tails in the brush and brambles of PA, or a lighter bullet for flat shooting an antelope at 200 yards in Wyoming.
4 30-06’s as well. 2 Garands, a Rem 700 and a Rem 760.
Probably better you don’t fire it. That rifle has antique value that will only increase. Why take a chance with it?
First rifle I ever bought when I turned 18 was a Remington 700 ADL in 270 win. Still have it and it is very accurate.
I love the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser. What does that say about me?
Well that isn’t mine, I just found the photo, mine looks the same but has a regular scope. Mine is a 30-30. Can’t decide whether this or my AR is more fun to shoot.
How about 7.62x39? Not the best for anything, but it works for everything, and the ammo is cheaper than dirt, especially at Cheaper Than Dirt.
.416 Rigby, just in case scientists manage to clone mastodons.
I love the 1917, the Garand, and the 03-A3; don’t know much about the Woodmaster.
I know it has antique value. It has all matching SN’s. I bought it for only $300. It is in very good shape too.
It has top notch ballistic coefficient as well.
.
Ditto the Robert’s round
I burned through a ton of 7.62 x 39 back in the 80s in my el cheapo SKS. Seventy bucks for the rifle don’t get much better...than that cheap ammo!
I’m with you on the 8mm Mauser
Nice! The humble .30-30 is my favorite round. Despite owning a plethora of other chamberings, I take most deer with an stock 1894. In the dense forests of New England you rarely have a clear shot much past 50 yards. It does the job nicely.
At my age, I have to say .30-’06. It can do pretty much anything. Of the rifles I own most are 8mm Mauser because I collect them. It’s pretty much ballisticly identical to the ‘06.
You like Norwegian and Swedish girls!
