Maybe so but there are thousands of planes just sitting there. I’d take my chances on finding that 5 or 10 percent still totally airworthy.

I’d at least get out of Virginia headed west or to an island that has a runway. Clear out the zombies and watch your sick neighbors so they don’t do what Harry Potter did at the prison.

An airplane would be mostly a one time use though. I am thinking about this more of what level of technology can they continue to have.

I would build a settlement near a railroad, like when they were in the prison, or go to the coast, and get some boats.

They could build horse drawn carts, and move easily along the railroad, and it would be much easier to maintain than the roads. They could spread their settlements along the railroad.

The auto roads will deteriorate quickly with no maintenance, and the first big ice storm or wind after the apocalypse will put so much debris on them they could never clear them again.

Boats would be easy as well. Spread settlements along the coast and trade. This show is kind of a new history of the colonial period of the United States. Just as colonists started at the coastline and moved inland, the survivors will have to do the same.

I used to want them to go to North Dakota or Minneapolis, because the zombies would be frozen and easily dispatched. But without electricity and modern infrastructure, modern people wouldn't have the knowledge to grow enough food in the summer to survive a winter in Minneapolis.

I definitely think about how to survive a zombie apocalypse too much, but that is the appeal of zombies.

Just don't take the planes that the other 90 or 95 percent of the would-be pilots take.

This was all done before, in the 1951 sci-fi novel "Day of the Triffids" by John Wyndham. The safe island in the novel is the Isle of Wight. I think an island is a very natural candidate for a defensible area. So it is important that the TV characters never reach an island, or else the drama of the show would be permanently punctured.
