I could agree with some, and disagree with some. The fact is that there are regional and cultural variations. “Pecan” is a major one, and I am keeping my short “a”, thank you. I will also say “fudge-ickle” instead of “Fudge-sickle”, notwithstanding that the manufacturer decrees. I will also say “cran” for “cray-on” and “dror” for “drawer” regardless of what my wife thinks.

The language is full of words that are pronounced differently than they are spelled, as one can find on Worcester on Wednesday.

Only those of us with roots in Dixie know how to say pecan properly.

50. vehicle – Although there is an H in the word, to pronounce it is to sound hicky. Say /VEE-IKL/, not /vee-Hikl/.

Never met a southerner who didn't say the H.

Pee-CAHN, pee-CANN, or PEE-can? You know, like the pah.

One that bugs me — not a word but an expression — is the use of the adjective instead of the infinitive in the expression “It needs _______.” As in “It needs washed” or “It needs painted.”

No, it needs TO BE washed or it needs PAINTING. The verb “to need” is transitive; it requires an object. And an object, by definition, cannot be an adjective.

How’s that for grammar nazism?

Pecan = pu-con. That’s how people in the Pecan Capital of the World pronounce it so they should know. Never ever pronounce it pee-can. A pee can is what you take with you on a long trip.
