"we've had Muslims in American since George Washington.” Really?

“We’ve had Muslims in American since George Washington.” So claimed Hillary Clinton during the second presidential debate. This was part of her response to Donald Trump’s proposed temporary ban on Muslim immigration, which appears to have metamorphosed into “extreme vetting.”

Some analysts trotted out the familiar lines about Muhammad Hamilton and Abdullah Hancock. At the risk of stating something I may not have stated before, Mrs. Clinton was right. Muslims who had been enslaved by other Muslims (against the dictates of Islam not to enslave fellow believers), as well as Muslims kidnapped and press-ganged into slavery by non-Muslims, were enslaved in the US at the time of the Founding.

Like many others I found her comment strange in isolation, as a defense against Mr. Trump’s previously proposed ban. Many things have been around for a long time. Some are good. Some are bad. Some we want more of, some less. The relevant question isn’t whether Islam and Muslims have been in America since the time of Washington, but what their presence has brought to America..."

How many wars have we already fought against them?

Muslims were possibly present in DC since the time of George Washington ...

There was no D.C., to speak of, at the time of George Washington, who died in 1799. The national capital was first in New York City and then in Philadelphia during Washington's Presidency, with a brief refugee period in Princeton, N.J.

The District of Columbia was authorized by legislation in 1790. John Adams was the first President to reside there (as little as possible) beginning in 1800.

In summary, any Moslems resident, during George Washington's lifetime, in the area that is now D.C. would almost certainly have been plantation slaves.

Thanks for correction. I’m glad that somebody is keeping an eye on me.

We have NEVER fought a war against Mooslims. MOOslims are agents of peace. The bad guys have nothing to do with TRUE Isalam, and its command to kill infidels.

Extremely few, and what is of most relevance, making no appreciable contribution to the creation and development of this great country. Liberals are trying to propound this huge LIE that Muslims have been IMPORTANT to this country from the beginning, and that is simply b.s.

The main aspect of Muslim interactions with the USA before recent decades was all the piracy and enslavement practiced by the “Barbary Pirates” in the late 18th/early 19th centuries.

Truthfully, the US did bring back some Barbary pirates for hanging. But it remains to be seen if afterwards they contributed to our land by fertilizing it; or if they were dumped at sea to feed the fishies.

This reminds me of the young boy who asked his father why was there no muslims on Star Trek. The father replied “...because it’s in the future.”

We can only hope that art imitates life.

You did ask! I don’t think we can have too many largely-irrelevant historical facts ;-).

I graduated high school in 1964. We had a Muslim girl for
an exchange student that year. I had never heard the word
“Moslem” nor did I know a thing about it. She was a nice
girl, at least outwardly; but she had a real problem in our
school just finding something she could eat at lunch. The
cafeteria did not quit serving hot dogs,a mainstay.

I hope that Mine’ found Christ. She went back to Turkey &
married a Muslim guy her parents chose for her. She died
several years ago.

I remember in Ben Franklin’s biography when he was discussing freedom of religion, he said that if a Muslim wanted to preach here, he’d have that right. If Muslims were here, he wouldn’t have said that.

Didn’t Mohammed Atta sign the Declaration of Independence or something like that? Why else would I know that name?

Kunta Kinte from Roots was supposedly Muslim. Another slave said when he refused pork fat, “Oh, you be one o’them Guinea-men what don’t eat Poke”.
