Real cottonmouths are very temperamental - I have seen them chase people. Most snakes will assume a defensive posture where the cottonmouth will advance in an aggressive manner. Grew up in swamps, caught banded water snakes, cottonmouths, eastern diamondbacks, black racers, rats, etc. Meanest of all is the cottonmouth.....

They do NOT chase people.
They *may* move towards a person if the person happens to be standing between the snake and its den or other cover.
This has been debunked *so* many times, it’s tedious.
There’s a bazillion videos of people mocking those who keep repeating the “Cottonmouth chase” myth.

As a south Louisiana Cajun, you cannot count high enough to know how many times these mfr’s chased me in OPEN rice fields with NO dam ‘nests’ in miles! They are mean as hell and do NOT need irritating to aggressively charge.
