Looking to buy a Mossburg 590

Posted on 10/07/2016 1:15:41 PM PDT by Da_Shrimp

I'm in the UK and sadly we're limited in what we can buy gun-wise, but I already shoot clays and have a gun licence. I recently saw a Mossberg 590 for sale and I really like it. Any opinions on this gun? Worth getting?

Be sure to take it with you when you go boating.

I have an old 500 short-barrel that’s never let me down. As reliable as they come.

Mossberg makes excellent shotguns. I have a bolt action from the 1950’s that still works flawlessly.

Not fancy, but functionally, as good as any.

You can’t go wrong with a Mossberg 500 or 590.

I like the Mossberg, I’ve had mine (model 500) for more than 30 years and it keeps shooting.

If you hunt, they are noisy both in operation and they rattle when you are walking in the field. And there are shotguns with smoother actions.

Overall, I like mine and bought one for my son.

There are people hate Mossberg, I’m sure they will chime in.

My son is really into shooting and after his first rifle (a Marlin .22), he really wanted a shotgun. I bought him a 590
and he has fired so many rounds through it without any problems.

The 590 is a great gun. Buy it and you will never be disappointed.

Good weapon. I have one.

Not so good if you intend to put a pistol grip on it - the safety is way high up on the receiver and actuation requires letting go of the grip.

For a pistol grip shotgun you want one with a trigger guard-mounted safety, like the Remington 870.

Make sure it has the STEEL safety switch. The plastic ones have been known to break. If not, you can buy a steel replacement and install it.

Getting my 9 yr old son into shooting, too. He’s quite a mean shot with a .177 air rifle but I want to graduate him into more tasty stuff.

I have a Mossberg 590. Great! Has the heat shield over the barrel.

Back around 1989-90 I used to work during Christmas Break from grad school, for a dealer. He was a pretty large one and also did light gunsmithing. For more complex work he sent it out.

He kept a big supply of Mossberg 500 replacement safties as they nearly all seemed to break. It was very easy to lose the small ball bearing but otherwise an easy job.

I am sure they have corrected the problem in the last 25 years.

Otherwise they were good shotguns.
