Ratings Fumble for NFL Surprises Networks, Advertisers
Wall Street Journal ^ | Ocotber 6, 2016 | Joe Flint

The NFL has been sacked for a loss.

Once considered immune to the audience erosion plaguing the television industry, ratings for the National Football League have tumbled through the first four weeks of the season.

TV networks have bet heavily on sports in general, and the NFL in particular, because of the must-see value of their content. While more viewers are watching commercial-free streaming services like Netflix or recording shows on DVRs and skipping the ads, sports is still primarily watched live, making it valuable to advertisers.

Get used to it, and more. People are SICK AND TIRED of being pissed on and then told that it is raining.

You think that your players can dis the flag and national anthem of the country that let’s your league, its owners and the spoiled brat, shit-fer-brains thug players become multi-millionaires FOR PLAYING A GAME? Fine, you can do that - it is still nominally a free country (at least until the Witch assumes office in January).

But I have certain choices open to me, as well. Guess what, I will NEVER, EVER, FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE watch an NFL game, go to an NFL game, or buy any NFL merchandise - not unless this crap is fixed within the next week or two. I am DONE with people pissing on my country and me, and expecting that I will applaud and support them. GFY, Roger Goodell, GFY NFL owners, and most especially, GFY spoiled, thug ingrates. You are all dead to me.

Years ago, there was a Grambling football show that I initially thought was a broadcast. Turns out it was just the plays, no huddles, no time outs. The show as 1/2 hour long.

The boycotting of the NFL fake games and anti America stances by the NFL BLM thugs is hurting not just the games and their teams by themselves.

Last week we were in our local Walmart and Safeway for our weekly shopping. Both stores had rows of chips, beer, sodas, salsas, dips and other products for NFL watching by their customers in their homes or friends’s homes.

In both stores, asst managers said that their sales for the above products were less than last year, and they didn’t know why.

When my wife and I brought up the boycott of Americans due to the Former Niners thug qb, they just looked at us.

So our boycotts of NFL BLM thugs in plastic pants dissing our country, may be a healthy thing for Americans not hosting or going to NFL parties to watch the overpaid thugs.

Maybe the makers and sellers of beer, sodas, chips, dips, salsa and other products not being consumed due to Kaperneck and his fellow BLM/NFL thugs, can get the NFL to back off.

If the NFL doesn’t back off, things will get worse for their teams, sponsors and those companies depending on their products being consumed in game watching parties across American homes.

Boycott the Former Niners and the other NFL BLM Thug team this evening on tv. Send a big message to the anti America Thugs in charge of the NFL.

I am probably reaching here, but I think the NFL ratings decline could be the election in microcosm.

You are right in the sense that people are tired of the p.c. crap. But, having said that, we will have to vote for Trump in such massive numbers that the voter fraud, that we know is rampant for the Hillary, can be massively overcome.

..."guilt over the concussion issue is causing viewers to stop watching.

GUILT ? That's a good one. The concussion issue itself is causing me to lose interest. Concussion protocol caused both NFC finals QB's out of games last week. Neither could finish, both lost.

Guilt ? This friggn' country has lost is mind.

Also when you have beta male dads and moms ( along with Barky) saying they don’t want their boys playing football. That attitude really hurts long term.

In all honesty, there are likely multiple reasons for viewership decline. The political season is reaching a crescendo and some debates have directly conflicted with prime time NFL. Mobile viewing is up, certainly, but who knows how much.

And then there's racial protests, which slap us all in the face while inferring we're racists. Those insults are not enough to chase away a rabid fan, but it will for those less fanatical, imho, at least it has in my case. In times of declining viewership it's probably not a good idea to pile on.

I suspect owners will eventually crack down. It's great to protest as you prefer, but not when you're on the clock and especially while in uniform.

The NFL game is increasingly designed to appeal to a superficial viewer who expects exciting special effects, and also to fantasy sports/gambling addicts. I don’t think the heart of TV viewership is really in either one of those categories.

A lot of the appeal of sports and entertainment is based on escape from politics and serious concerns. Bring them into those areas and, by definition, the audience will grow smaller.

You might be correct on that the “effeminate “ male attitude of modern suburbs might have something to do with it. Good point.

I am not sure how that plays out exactly though. From what I see the less masculine guys are ejected from the home via divorce. What families remain the father tends to be a pretty male and the wife pretty female. In any case those men ejected from the home no longer watch games on Monday night or Sunday night like they used to, so the sons are not exposed to it.

Not sure how to quantify it though. I think that would fall under the 11~12 % who turned off prior to the entire refusing to stand mess.

Don’t forget Hally Berry. Others?

Halle Berry is playing football now?! I never thought she was much of an actress, although she is very easy on the eyes.

Kids this days are more likely to be seen wearing a Lionel Messi FC Barcelona jersey than an NFL Jersey.

This is the favored apparel of my 14 YO son and 6 YO grandson:

We're looking forward to a great season!

Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN has experienced the biggest drop, down 17% to average 11.3 million viewers. Excluding the game up against the debate, ESPN is off 11%.

The reasons for ESPN's ratings decline are many. One example, all the coverage of Michael Sam who never made it in the NFL, yet got all that coverage because he is gay. Another fine example, honoring Jenner at the ESPYS. Three, a repressive extremely PC policy where anyone who dares to challenge liberal orthodoxy a la Curt Schilling is immediately suspended or fired. I'm so old I can remember when ESPN did only sports. Oh sure you got some plitics mixed in on talk shows like The Sports Reporters, but now it has morphed into MSNBC with game highlights.
