Very strange. Although it doesn’t totally fit, it makes me wonder if they did ‘resort diving’ with bad training and supervision and wound up with immersion pulmonary edema combined with severe decompression sickness. Just a thought.

I was owing to say sounds like high altitude sickness but if they had been diving that is a different issue.

I think that's a very plausible theory at this point. Perhaps their illness a few hours later was misinterpreted by hotel staff as intoxication.

In any case, it's very sad. I know that a lot of folks enjoy these exotic locales, and some may call this a sexist comment, but it seems to me that many American women get themselves in a lot of trouble going to these s--thole countries. How 'bout vacationing in the good ol' U.S. of A, or at least the 1st world (Europe, Australia, NZ).
