The greatness of Scully's call is that after the dramatic build-up during Gibson's long at bat, once he announces that Gibson went yard, for the next 70 seconds, Scully doesn't utter a sound, letting the sights and sounds of the moment tell the tale.

If it happened today, we'd hear Costas or Buck discussing something about global warming or the BLM movement as Gibson hobbled around the bags.

“In a year that has been SO improbable, the IMPOSSIBLE has happened”

Masterful! It always just rolled right off his magical tongue. Vin was a consummate professional in every way. He’s the gold standard of broadcasters. Vinny started out in radio and that’s why he was so good at telling baseball stories as the games were going on. He came up in a time when you had to worry about ‘dead air’ on radio. Any baseball fan who didn’t get to know his style like i did really missed out.

There will never be another like him.

I think what made Scully and those of his generation so great was they started in radio. They knew the power of the listener's imagination

Odd that today, with images, they talk ALL the time.
