I remember Arnold Palmer flying thru our control area (NAS Albany, GA) in the early 70’s. If I remember correctly, his call sign was NAP-1.

Nice story.
Thanks for sharing!

He was part of my life for sure and he was a great gentleman who loved his wife and family. His Dad was a pro in LaTrobe. Both his swing and his putting style were unconventional. He hit the ball very low and he was a “jab” putter. He did not follow through!! No one has done that EVER!! ( except me when I choked)

A true story about Arnie was retold by former PGA Tour player and current Champions Tour player and CBS golf analyst Bobby Clampett. Clampett, a California kid, tells the story of how when he was a 12 year old kid he made it to Pebble Beach in the 70s to watch The King. Due to traffic problems he had no ride home. So what does a 12 year old Arnold Palmer fan do when he needs a ride? He walks up to The King and asks for a ride home. True to Arnies image, he says, Sure kid and gave Clampett a lift home to Carmel Valley about 10 miles away.

Arnold was from Latrobe. His father was the pro and greens keeper at the club. Arnold later bought that club and kept a residence there.

From the link (2011-02-01):
Palmer, 81, flew his Cessna Citation X from Palm Springs, California, back to his home in Orlando, Florida, on Monday, January 31, his last trip in the left seat. On arrival he announced that he would not renew his pilot certification, which expired that day. “I'll still be flying in my plane as much as always, just not in the cockpit," Palmer said. “Flying has been one of the great things in my life. It’s taken me to the far corners of the world. I met thousands of people I otherwise wouldn't have met. And I even got to play a little golf along the way.”

Thank-you for that info. Read that he bought the CC in Latrobe, PA years later.
Mr. Palmer also won in CT at the then Insurance City Open, now know as the Travelars Open in Crownwell, CT.

What a great Video! Riding behind the Wake Forest (his Alma Mater) Demon Deacon.
Mr. Palmer was the ultimate professional golfer and man. How this leaves me in tears! God bless you, Arnie, and God bless and keep your loved ones and all your fans throughout the world.
