And yet we’ve chosen to make an enemy out of Bashir El-Assad, a guy who always played by international rules, protected religious minorities and saved his more brutal actions for fanatics that we now support.

By “we” of course I mean the outgoing government.

Hopefully Trump will take a few days to sort this mess out in January and we can have a more sane foreign policy in the Middle East, even if it doesn’t always suit Israel who may have hoped that a weakened Syria would help them in some way. Obviously that was a miscalculation in the long run, if Syria ever became fully governed by the fanatics, Israel would be in a much worse situation than with El-Assad who only made limited moves against them.

There are no perfect solutions in that part of the world but the ones we have chosen are about as bad as they could possibly get.
