My "pellet gun" is plenty loud enough. Enough so that I would recognize it as a gun shot.

I have plenty of squirrels in my back yard. But four feet beyond that, I have neighbors with two toddlers.

An errant shot that could kill a squirrel, could do the same to those kids.
