Actually she picked Kaine because she thinks she got a Twofer with him. One you already pointed out he speaks Spanish (with a bad accent I am told! Anyway big deal he is an Anglo who speakers Spanish. So what?) but the second reason is he is a fire brake for Virginia. That's an odd pick because he is not that popular here. he is sort of a “meh” guy to the average Virginian. A better Rat pick for retaining Virginia would have been Warner. He is far more popular in Virginia. (Why I don't know!) but she would have had to give up the Spanish speaking aspect. I expected her to fully exploit the Latino immigrant angle and pick one of the Castro brothers. One is the mayor of San Antonio & I think the other is a Congresscritter.

Another reason she picked Kaine is that he is a good little soldier and will do exactly as he is told, won’t get out of line or get any big ideas of his own.
