No why you could get close enough with a fireman.

Nope, if you look closely, you see a red dot on the side of the craft just before the “failure” -
My guess is a terawatt excimer LAZER or on old school GRAZER.

WHat you can’t tell was it it was ground or space based....

I’ve looked closely, in stop motion too. There is no “red dot”.
