The “unknown” ‘at the time’ was regarding who was releasing the data....some thought initially it was coming out of Russia..which seems to always be the first thought for anything happening such as that...but then the guessing started....I never did see who actually released the e-mail data....but by morning every Global Warming enthusiast had their pants in a knot...and every true Climatologist was in a happy dance.

My recollection is that the university and the local popos investigated with no announced findings. They either still don’t know or it was swept under the rug.
