I distinctly remember being in a lower elementary grade when we got this new fangled reading aid called SRA (I think it stood for Scientific Reading Associates). It consisted of a cardboard box with tiers of different colors. The tiers in the front were easier material, graduating up to the most difficult material in the back tier. We were supposed to read one of the cardboard sheets per week. That bored me, so I read all the sheets within a couple of days.

My reward for this was to be put out into the hall for not following directions. Great teaching, eh?

I was one who was rapped on the hand with a ruler for reading to the end of the book in reading circle in first grade (the little girl next to me informed the teacher of my great transgression). My first grade “teacher” was so very insightful that instead of thinking, “this child can already read easily at the first grade level, what can I do to direct her reading skills to the next level?,” she punished me for finishing a book too quickly.

Like yours, another great moment in teaching.
