I know we haven't much discussed the Olympic races. But I wanted to say that someone diving over the finish line in a track race doesn't seem like it should be a winning play. Shouldn't it be the required that you end the race, standing??
Yes. You must dive and you must stick it.
PS A gymnastics term. Of course if you take a dive in, say, fencing you get stuck.
Actually diving to first base when running in baseball has been studied exhaustively, it takes longer than running through. I am willing to bet that it is the same with track. If you keep running you will get to the finish quicker than diving.
The announcer said the only rule is that the first torso to cross the line wins. Of course you can’t interfere with other runners or cross into their lane. I don’t know if diving really helps though.
I saw it and could only think of road rash.
True. On the other hand the dive or the lean does let your body extend forward of your center of mass compared to someone who’s upright. It’s the same thing as reaching forward with your arm except you’re reaching with your torso.
I think steroids should be allowed and medically administered.
