Gabby Douglas may have just helped her team win gold at the Olympics but that hasn't stopped some fans criticizing her for not putting her hand on her heart during the U.S. national anthem.
The American gymnast was the only member of her squad who was photographed with her hands by her sides as The Star-Spangled Banner played in Rio on Tuesday.
The Olympic veteran took gold alongside Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman in the Women's Team All-Around gymnastics ompetition.
Twitter user Angela complained: 'There is no excuse as to why you could not salute the flag of the country that gave you the opportunity to compete.'
'Gabby Douglas just standing there and not placing her hand over her heart while our anthem played was UN-Olympic,' Dawn Wisdom wrote.
'As a military kid Gabby Douglas knows the proper way to respect the anthem,' another social media user said.
And Brittany Hargrave added: 'On the one hand, so proud of the Final Five gold win. On the other, so disappointed Gabby Douglas didn't salute the flag.'
Douglas explained why she didn't raise her hand to her heart during the national anthem after spotting the complaints on social media.
'First I want to say thank you everyone for all your support! It's a huge honor for me to be able to represent Team USA,' she said.
'In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played.
'I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I'm so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country.'

Indeed.
Reasonable perspective.
I’m done with thread, and thank you for having the patience to teach full-time.
I teach part-time - adjunct - at the local community college. It’s an education (pun) for sure.
I worked with a black guy. We went to a sandwich shop. The guy making the sandwich used the end of a tomato on his sandwich. The black guy went nuts and screamed racism at the Hispanic worker. Every day after that, the black guy would claim he would never go to that sandwich shop because they were a bunch of “spic racists!” I’ve had my fill of black racists.
LMAO.
I described what I saw in the picture.
Quote all the bible verses you want....then go to what I wrote abd find one si gle thing that made a judgement about her at all...
You have fallen into infatuation with this tumbling former kid now adult because of some words written in a book allegedly by her.
And for you to tbrow around racism charges and lump my screename into that is absurd and meanspirited.
Which is why you got the replies from me that you did.
It is YOU who are being judgemental...and for the record when the bible talks about judging people it is in relation to saying who is and who is not worthy of going to heaven.
Not rhis crap you are worried about.
If you think some individual freeper made a racist comment then dirext your fire at them....do not cast aspersions on me while you wear your holiness for the world to see....something in the bible about that now isn’t there?
Didn't send multiple pings or posts directed to you...just one...& it had to do w/what you said in post #88:
Just judging Gabby's body language (when not performing) and facial expressions during the competitions so far, she is a far different Gabby Douglas than four years ago. She seems to have a giant chip on her shoulder. She comes across as bitter and envious.
And so you construct an entire narrative where are you somehow able to psychodiagnose a complete stranger to you as "bitter & envious" based on being judgmental about "Gabby's body language (when not performing) and facial expressions..."???
I'm not even remotely interested in your discussion. Please stop pinging me.
Well, then stop pinging me if you don't want to "discuss" anything w/me.
However, ANYTIME you enter into a public forum and express your opinions, there's not some magical "teflon" buffer around them that protects your special self from receiving feedback on them.
If you don't want feedback, then I'd suggest you find a forum where hit & run comments are the norm.
There's no such thing as a "word-hedge of protection" here.
I only partially agree here...because so few FREEPERs actually stand up to the racist comments that find a way on these threads...it comes down to the old adage: "If you are not part of a solution [in this case, reining in racists], you are part of the problem [in this case overtolerance in our "tolerance" culture]
Besides, your comment was borderline, anyway...and perhaps you're fussin' about feedback directed your way because you might suspect it was borderline, after all???
The problem depicted ESPECIALLY among other FREEPERs on this thread (NOT YOU) who become unhinged with their racist comments is that they take one person's feature of their external body (their skin color) & seek to form a "one-size-fits-all narrative that's suppose to be applied to all the inward character beneath that given skin color.
Even YOU, TheErnFormerlyKnownAsBig couldn't ignore judging Gabby Douglas' black color in your #11 comment:
Really? Your transcendent clairvoyant skills absolutely astounds me?
(Perhaps you could share them with daily FR vanities & tell us each day what Hillary & Donald & our POTUS are "contemplating" based ONLY upon a few photos & vidclips???)
And if you don't have any such knowledge, please explain whay that comment isn't borderline racism -- to assume & presume that the average African-American Olympic athlete is somehow prone to raise a "black power salute" at any given moment???

Get over yourself.
People who think they can verbally "lord" it over others by dictating them to "get over" themselves are in desperate need of a self-dosage.
Bully.
#1...Jesus never said to hide light under a bushel.
#2...was that your high-bred "holiness" that was conveying to the world in post #11 that Gabby Douglas may want to submerge that alleged inner "black-power salute" she was supposedly "contemplating" according to your vast mind-reading occultic skills?
It's quite hypocritical of you to play the "holier-than-thou" trump card all as your post #11 displayed a "holier-than-thou" judgmentalism of Gabby Douglas.
(He/she said in his/her best bully tone, seemingly conveying that if ya can't stick to the issues & win the intellectual discussion, well, hey, ya can always go for the personal jugular)
Sophistry.
Uou are the one shaking the beads and bible at people.....I never mentioned religion until you came in the scene calling people racists and questioning folks’ christianity.
All I did was say what the photo looked like to me.....and with the caveat that photos can fool people because they a snapshot in time.
Go sit in your chair and mutter about all the sinners you know. I know your type well.
