I was listening to the talk radio show Coast to Coast AM, this morning.
There was a very good segment, on the threat of losing power, due to an EMP attack.
This is an issue, which George Noory, has been talking about, for almost two years.
I support him on this, and think this is an issue which Trump should take a position on.
America needs to protect our electrical grid.

Sufficiently high frequencies will pass through the mesh openings. A solid copper cage also requires spacing insulation isolating the protected items from the current in the metal skin—fiberglass would serve.

Do you remember about 2 years ago , a sniper shot at transformers at a sub-station that supplied electricity to the Silicon Valley ?
They shot .556 rounds at selected transformers in a secluded area, and were never found. Area of fire was selectively choozen, and marked with rock piles, and they were effective.
They took out that one sub-station, but the grid was able to cover the loss, and the electrical grid stayed up.
A fluke - maybe so
But it was well planned and executed, and showed exactly how vulnerable the rural locations of the electrical infrastructure of this country really are.
There's a very low percentage of the population that has what you or I have. So, it would be catastrophic.
Never heard about EMP traveling thru the ground. It will travel down the long power lines. It will invade anything not shielded (as in a Faraday cage).
Even if it is unplugged.
I have my own 4,600 watt micro-grid. With extra 4000W inverter and charge controller in a Faraday cage.
These are the 2 Nork sats that pass over the US daily. They are washing machine sized and emit no signals.
Sometimes they are both over the US at the same time. One over the West and the other over the East.

Any break along the transmission lines would take down the area being served. The geographic area of transmission lines versus substations is a relative consideration of grid vulnerability. Power lines in an EMP would be an enormous collector of energy to be dissipated; but, could be recovered more quickly than damages to substation equipment. Widespread disruption of the grid would require substantial time to incrementally load the generation gear; and, maintain stability upon a reset after a major disruption.
Solar panels are semi-conductor devices and vulnerable-—do you possibly have a DC micro-water turbine generator?

I’d add a spare condenser and coil safely stored.
Condenser = capacitor
Ignition coil= long copper conductor on both the high and low side.
If the generator has an exciter for the rotating field, find a spare exciter.
I’m not familiar with an Ajax generator, but have quite a bit of experience with ST type 1800 rpm generators. If they are similar, I might suggest a spare rectifier as well.
Good idea. It’s a good idea to keep spares like that no matter what happens.

I have extra diodes for the panels as well. No water gen, but I do have a multi-fuel gen and 2 sources of water.

Did you try the radio test? I don’t want you to believe me without checking for yourself.
The FM radio broadcast service is “in band” for an EMP. That’s why this test is valid.
The EMP flowing by a wire creates an electrical current. Just like wires spinning in an electrical field is a generator.
In the case of an EMP the pulse can be so strong that the current produced overwhelms the electronics in modern devices and basically fries them.
The device doesn't even have to be plugged into a wall socket, internal wiring creates enough to damage it.
We have been “preppers” ever since “Y2K”. Made very
elaborate preparations, even down to getting a new
woodstove. Have used it in winter ever since. Know how to
prepare the stuff we store, too. - Our water well is fixed
for manual use, too. I learned to eat dried beans growing
up; for just about every meal except school lunches with
those giant REALLY homemade rolls. FANG has a wood splitter,
easy compared to manual splitting. Takes gasoline; we did
store some gasoline in a tank back in Y2K. Our woodstove
uses small amount of wood. At first, FANG would ramp it up
until the whole house was hot as a firecracker. I finally
got him to tone it down; so a couple of sticks of wood
burn real slow and last all day. - I’m 70, so grew up with
rustic accommodations. . outdoor toilet, Sears & Roebuck
catalog for toilet paper. - We’re still somewhat spoiled.
Frame it as protecting essential infrastructure as a way to battle terrorists.
If you talk EMP or some sort of prepper’ scenarios, then you will lose a lot of people/support.
