Interestingly enough, there is substantial evidence to suggest that the Japanese had in fact developed their own atomic bomb, and that a test detonation took place off the coast of what is now North Korea in the days just before Hiroshima, this documentary is quite well done and I found it more than credible:

And Germany tried to ship a submarine load of uranium or yellowcake to Japan at one point of ok. Japan and Germany were both actively working on The Bomb.
