Actually a depression in the tongue like that is a symptom of ALS. The tongue is a muscle. The atrophy from ALS in it's early stages shows up as coughing, choking on saliva, and creases or depressions in the tongue.
ALS goes one of two paths. One is speech, swallowing, etc...
The other is gait, walk, extremities.
