I think that she was in Boston, Ma. Or a suburb there of. Legally owned weapons there are scarce. Secondly, if she had, mowed them down as you suggested, she would never be getting out of jail. Even if one is carrying a weapon legally, one does shuck his/her hogleg out and start blasting away, particularly at juveniles. Doing that is a guaranteed one way trip to the State House for a long time. Some States may allow deadly force to be used defending property. Most don’t.

Oh, that is the difference. I am in Texas. Here, if I see someone running away from my house after a burglary, even if he has something in his hand that MIGHT look like something which belongs to me, I can mow him down. ;-)
