But Christians are taught that we are all sinners by nature in this fallen world (out of the Garden), and until we recognize our need for the Savior, all our good deeds are "like filthy rags" to the Lord, because they are self-righteousness. Only through recognizing our dependence on the workings of God in our lives can we achieve true humility. We are not good left to our own instincts; He is good and those who surrender allow Him to use us for His good purposes.
