Going up that tower yesterday was eventful. The stone spiral staircase is only 18 inches wide. It has to cater for both directions of traffic.
Luckily there are window ledges to stand in.

Luckily there are window ledges to stand in." I've seen wells made that way. Apparently it was a village project to build a masonry well for everybody to use.
The stairs were on opposite sides of the well. You would go down one set of stairs, get your water, and then proceed back up the other side. Seems efficient.
No windows in the well, by the way.
