“There have been bows and arrows since the stone age. OK for hunting, but never used in combat by gentlemen.”

If you engage in combat as a gentleman, chances are you are going to lose. War is not a game of cricket, played by gentlemen in white suits. War is a brutal, horrific endeavor meant to destroy one’s enemy. By your standards, submarine crews and high-altitude bomber crews (since both attempt to employ stealth to get into position to launch their attacks) are ungentlemanly scoundrels, deserving only of contempt and derision.

I’m just reminding you what people used to believe back in the day when there were still gentlemen in the world. And yes they did fight face to face. They were more brave than you can imagine.

You may not know much about history if you don’t know that submarine attacks used to be considered contemptible. British General Arthur”Bomber” Harris was shunned by many of his peers after wwii.

There might be fewer wars in this world if they required the older kind of courage and skill, instead of just pushing a button.
