WH defends Lynch from Clinton meeting fallout

The White House on Thursday defended Attorney General Loretta Lynch from criticism over her private meeting with former President Clinton.

The meeting took place in the midst of a federal investigation into his wife, Hillary Clinton, and her private email server during her tenure as secretary of State, but White House press secretary Josh Earnest said both Lynch and President Obama are committed to conducting a fair investigation.

ADVERTISEMENT “I think the bottom line is simply that both the president and the attorney general understand how important it is for the Department of Justice to conduct investigations that are free of political interference,” he told reporters.

Earnest declined to say whether it was appropriate for Lynch to take the meeting, and acknowledged that questions about it “are entirely legitimate.”

But he refused to second-guess her decision to speak privately with Bill Clinton, saying he took Lynch at her word that the two did not discuss the investigation.

Is it possible that Lynch is doing a little free lancing and that the White House was not aware of the meeting?

I'm guessing that NO ONE was supposed to be aware of the meeting.

But, someone on the ramp spilled the beans and now everyone is in CYA mode. Lynch's body and facial language tells that story.

I've heard that claim, but I haven't seen any corroboration.

But if it's true, it was likely because it was "neutral" territory where they could have a discussion that was completely off-the-record.
