The High Sparrow, Like Stannis, was a man who was doing his duty out of devotion, not self aggrandizement.
I think your comparison of the High Sparrow and Stannis is more apt than you think. They both were willing to do anything to achieve their ends. Stannis allowed his daughter to be burned alive (only the worst of his many cruelties). How did The High Sparrow become the most powerful person in King's Landing? By having people thrown in prison for their "sins." Cersei elevated him to High Septon, and then he turned on her when the time was right.
For both Stannis and The High Sparrow, their self aggrandizement turned out to be their undoing.

Except that these weren't just sins, these were actual crimes against Westerosi law. No one on the show denied that.
