noun

Denotes the attempt to obtain or the actual obtaining of something by making a false statement or expression of deceit.

It is derived from Latin obreptio (stealing or creeping upon), related to the verb obrepere (to creep or crawl up to, steal up on).

The word is uniquely applicable to the subordination of perjury as a means of achieving undeserved ends so popular in today's political circles.
