2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words | JUNE 22, 2016 | Norman Schur

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

obreption [ob REP shuhn]

hear it pronounced

noun

Denotes the attempt to obtain or the actual obtaining of something by making a false statement or expression of deceit.

It is derived from Latin obreptio (stealing or creeping upon), related to the verb obrepere (to creep or crawl up to, steal up on).

The word is uniquely applicable to the subordination of perjury as a means of achieving undeserved ends so popular in today's political circles.

Hmmmmn.

Odd, in ten + years, I’ve NEVER had a problem misusing the Word of the Day!

That didn’t sound right, did it?

Wheels within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can’t see their effects

Sounds like.... Eruptive obreption diminishes veracity. We are soon to be regaled with scenes full of explosives from a book about the Clintoon characters in the WH. And the old man said, "Remus, tell us a story."

Hillary’s IT manager set
A brand new record today-
To questions asked-the 5th
Was all that he had to say

Over 100 times he refused
To say even one more word-
He tried to avoid obreption-
But guilt is what was heard

Casting doubt and shadows
On the Clinton obfuscation
At the least may that ruin
Her plans for a coronation...

I really don’t see why a few people come here off and on to bitch about the WFTD thread-if you don’t like it, don’t come to class-find something to bitch about on some other thread-the rest of us have been enjoying this one for years...

There is a thorn in your rose. Yes, of course, and also the highly educated - as opposed to the indoctrinated.

Here’s a thought - Trump will be wither a clod and a massive disappointment or the greatest president in our lifetime. Hard to say which way that will go. On balance, however, he will stop the Marxist/leftist train dead on the tracks no matter what else he does.

I woke up with this Wallflowers tune in my head-it must have been playing on the classic rock station while I was asleep-

“Hey, come on try a little
Nothing is forever
There’s got to be something better than
In the middle
But me and Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight”...

I was singing it while working, and the concrete guy said the words to that song are such a downer-I explained that I thought so, too but I had the earworm-he put on a Pink Floyd CD, and we started singing along with “The Wall”-traded depressing for ominous...

Ominous is the prime number for this time we are in. Has it ever been so in other climes when the world was ready to break from its moorings?

The complaint was amusing in that it questioned the very foundation of the WFTD, to expand vocabulary. Either a child or a demented curmudgeon.

Either way they appear to have-

“Too much time on my hands, too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands”...

Reminds me of when I was a teen in the mid-late 60’s-I’m ready for the revolution-have been since I was 14-but it didn’t come then, and I’ve been waiting ever since-maybe it comes at last-I’m still here, still ready...
