In all seriousness...
I read that story many, many years ago, and never forgot it. Although I posted the possibility as a tongue-in-cheek comment here, the possibility of such an occurrence has always made Me think carefully about the concept of God and how Mankind relates to Him especially how the rest of Creation is affected...
I think, many times, that the decisions of God are far beyond the ken of mere mortals, and such a discovery would not surprise Me in the slightest... and would sadden Me greatly.
Such a possibility has always been a humbling concept over the years, for someday, might we ourselves somehow be then in the position to become the source of light for the Son of God to manifest when the need arises?
Should such a discovery come about... I can well imagine someday looking into the sky upon its discovery and asking... “My Lord God... why? And why did you not give us a choice?”
The sacrifice of an entire people... is not a thing lightly done, but I, and we, are not God... and so I ask Myself time and time again: would such an action once we discovered it be something we as a people could accept as the price for our existance?
To this day, I have not been able to formulate an answer.
