I think the swimming area is designated by the Newport Beach Lifeguard Association for Master Swimmers.

There was a life guard boat nearby and some other swimmers. Her excellent physical condition is one reason she survives.

The shark bit her once and then released her, with a lot of puncture wounds to the bone, a sucking chest wound, tissue loss on her arm, and a lot of blood.

The sharks were pups last year. It’s only now that they are big enough to start eating people. Stay tuned, the fun is just beginning.

Not fun! We fished off shore 100 miles or more in the Gulf of Mexico for quite a few years. We caught some sharks and saw others, can't imagine the horror of being attacked by one!

I was just reading an article saying that they have caught FOUR alligators in that lake since early today. None of the FOUR caught gators showed them being the attack gator. So the search goes on for a FIFTH...or more...alligators in that lagoon/lake. Looks to me like they apparently didn’t give a DAMN about guest safety! Another headline reads that another family was chased by an alligator there just last week.

I don’t think I was even on the thread blaming the parents. I agree with you. Terrible accidents happen in a minute. And tourists from non gator areas will know NOTHING about gators. I knew NOTHING about gators myself and was kind of shocked to learn they were in every golf pond on the course (where my parents moved in SC). When we were sort of close to one once on a walk, the local we were with was explaining how fast they can move even when it looks like they are asleep.

I also didn’t blame the parents in the zoo accident. I’m with you.

I’ve seen a Florida box turtle, a coral snake, black snake, bobcat, wild turkeys, deer, sand hill cranes etc. on my property.

This is Florida and they all live here.

If there is a body of water, even a small one, there is a chance of an alligator being in it. They live here.

We have a large pond on our golf course and a four foot gator was seen every day. He disappeared, probably walked himself to another pond. There were water moccasins also in the pond. The golf club put warning signs by the lake and the water moccasins disappeared! Now just fish which attract eagles and ospreys who dive in to pick up their lunch. Life goes on.

[[No. Why is a two year old standing next to a body of water alone? Never mind gators that’s a great way to let your kid drown.]]

He wasn’t standing alone , his father was standing right next to him while he was playing at the shore line in the water. His father was right there and was fighting to get him out of the gators mouth. Unless you are shinning a light over the water to spot eyes it is almost impossible to see one coming up on you at night .

The lagoon is a no swimming area . Gators are in just about every fresh water body of water in Florida . Disney calls trappers whenever they spot larger gators (the little ones are no threat ) but the problem is that at this time of year alligators move from pond to pond etc .

Why are there gators on that property?

It's Florida, there are gators in just about every body of water there. A fellow Freeper posted earlier today, that there are signs all over the parks that there are gators there, and to stay away from the water's edge.

Believe it or not, Disney’s Grand Floridian has signs which say, “Do not go into the water!”

Cuz it's Florida. It's a giant, nasty, sweltering swamp.

I detest the place. And gators.

[[When my kids were 2 they were in bed by 8:00.]]

The family was on vacation from Nebraska .
There is a two hours difference between mountain time and eastern standard time so your child would probably still be up too as it happened at 9:30 .

[[Florida now has 1.2 Million Alligators and growing.
Thats about 1,199,990 Too Many IMHO.

It’s insanity to encourage these dinosaur Era predators to live in ponds, canals, lakes, rivers, waterways and golf courses, living among Florida’s 20+ Million inhabitants.]]

The small gators are not a problem
I know the news said that it was between 4 and 7 feet but no way it had to be much larger.
The problem is that there are way to many bull size alligators now and I see them all over the place.
They seriously need a hunt to take the larger ones out because they move from place to place .

Alligators are not easily seen in the water. At night, their eyes reflect an orange color when light is shined directly on them. The target not paying attention is what the gator counts on when looking for prey. A gator will strike quickly. So, don’t go near the water. The gators love dogs.
Dogs are curious and don’t give up in trying to get close.
Don’t let your dog go near the water either.

There are gators all over the place in that area. People try to keep them out of certain places but it doesn’t really work. They can travel long distances over dry land so the truth is they can go anywhere they please if they are determined. Regularly people find them in their backyard pool that they thought was securely fenced against them.

Some people make a lot of money in that area gathering up gators that get where people don’t want them to be. They are a serious threat always in areas they like.

Nearly impossible to spot ‘em in the water in the dark, and they strike fast!

I don’t see any good reason that alligators should be “protected” but they are on the endangered list, apparently the numbers have at least quadrupled since they were added to that list 40+ years ago. I love nature as well as anyone but I don’t support protecting deadly predators in close proximity to human habitation.... if that means alligators would exist mainly in zoos and reserves, fine!

Apparently attacks are actually pretty rare, though, this smay be the 19th fatal attack since WWII (according to article linked below) — there were 17 fatal attacks through mid-May and then 2 more just in the past week:

My parents left me and dogs in hot cars too, with all the windows down. Now they roll all the windows up and leave children and pets to roast.

I can remember getting really hot but never sick, we were used to being much hotter and windows down is much different than windows up.

The gators in Florida had been virtually hunted to near extinction by the 1950s. LAWMAKERS, bending to pressure from environmental and animal rights groups, wrote laws protecting the alligator. “Protection” has increased their number to an estimated 1.2 million
They have yearly hunts now where permits are given to hunters and the numbers are reduced somewhat. There is a lake nearby that is reputed to have over 13,000 gators. It is where “problem” gators are released after capture elsewhere. I have never seen any water skiers on that lake!

Gators see a swimming pool as a body of water and get in:

Not to be confused with a gator pool party:

...where people ask to have gators put in their pools.
