1) I have been running Windows 10 (technical preview) on an older machine for more than 2 years.
2) I have recently upgraded a newer machine via the free offer.
3) I generally like Windows 10. It’s fast and more secure than previous Windows versions.
That stated, it is not for everyone, and it can cause problems. A friend allowed the upgrade on his laptop about 3 weeks ago, quickly decided he didn’t like it, and try to revert to Windows 7. The rollback failed, rendering his laptop unbootable.
I fixed it for him, using the recovery partition on his hard drive. This set him back to factory image, which was pre-Service Pack 1, meaning that there were hundreds of security patches need to be installed, including SP-1.
Microsoft has changed the Windows Update components several times in the past couple of years, making obtaining these updates exceptionally slow and erratic — with update scans lasting for HOURS and DAYS and finding nothing available. It took me nearly 3 weeks and a lot of investigation to finally assemble an up-to-date system.
If you contemplate allowing the upgrade, make sure you have an image of your current system to fall back on in case of disaster.
Some people do indeed like win10, and I am glad they like it.
Most don’t.
Some people liked win8 and 8.1, but many did not. Some people could not even run win7 on their machines and did not feel they should have to run out and purchase entirely new machines simply to run a newer OS.
Some people are content to continue on with their working-perfectly current computer set-ups and have absolutely no desire to “upgrade”. Being forced to do so at the rough equivalent of the dangerous end of a firearm is not going over well.
