I only carry 50 feet of rope with me because it’s just about all that will fit in the bag. If I had more use for it I would pack more - but I figure that 50 feet aughta do something for me.

And one of those cheapo hooks. Nothing too nice because I’m just going to leave it somewhere anyway.

A cheapo made-in-China hook, not too nice, might break. I would rather have a good mountain-climbing carabiner when I am trusting my life to it. Better to live and lose an expensive hook, than to have those last words going through my head: "I wish I had bought the expen---"

I am reminded of the story of a heat wave in Texas years ago, before global warming, when old people with brand new air conditioners sat in their houses and died because they didn't want to have the electric bill go up.

I have a bin in my car holding my bag which contains several biners, 2 pieces of 12ft 9mm static line for prusiks; and 150 ft of 10mm Edelweiss static line. From work to home, I have two sections where some rappelling greatly shortens my travel home.
