Why do they call them “muscle” cars?

Because they had big, powerful engines.

They were called muscle cars because they had huge engines and a lot of power at the time.

I can no longer afford new cars and have not kept up with the newer models for at least 20 years. Maybe a year ago I got free subscriptions to “Motor Trend” and “Road and Track”.

I started reading the specs and they are getting incredible amounts of horsepower out of small and medium sized engines. Actually more than the old 427, 426s.
